Experience the Kumano River Boat Tour | A 90-Minute Journey Along the World's Only UNESCO Water Pilgrimage Route

I recently experienced the Kumano River Boat Tour.
The Kumano River Boat Tour is extremely popular during the spring and autumn hiking seasons, with reservations often filling up several months in advance. In contrast, summer is a quieter season on the Kumano Kodo, as fewer hikers visit because of Japan's intense summer heat.
So this time, I made a reservation while keeping an eye on the weather forecast and enjoyed a Kumano River boat tour unique to this quieter season.
After experiencing it myself, I came away thinking, "This is something I would especially recommend in summer." The cool breeze over the river and the refreshing touch of the water made the trip wonderfully comfortable, providing a sense of coolness that you simply can't experience by hiking the Kumano Kodo alone.

Boarding the boat at the Kumano River Boat Center

From Kumano Hongu Taisha, take a local bus and get off at the "Michi-no-Eki Kumano River" bus stop. The ride takes about 50 minutes.

If you're traveling by car, you can park at the boarding point. After the boat tour, a free shuttle bus will take you back to the boarding point.

The Sacred Water Pilgrimage Route Traveled by Heian-Period Pilgrims

During the Heian period, members of the imperial family and aristocracy walked the rugged Nakahechi Route to worship at Kumano Hongu Taisha. After purifying themselves, they boarded small boats and traveled down the Kumano River to Kumano Hayatama Taisha. It is said that they departed from Oyunohara, the original site of Kumano Hongu Taisha, and spent about four hours drifting downstream. After the long pilgrimage on foot, the peaceful boat journey, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Kumano River, must have been a welcome opportunity to rest and reflect.
This river route is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, and is known as the world's only water pilgrimage route.
The Kumano River has long been more than a pilgrimage route—it has also supported the lives and livelihoods of the people who live along its banks.
Timber and agricultural products harvested along the river were once transported by boat to Shingu for distribution throughout the region. The river also served as an essential means of daily transportation for the local people.

Enjoy the Refreshing Waters and the Magnificent Nature of Kumano

Before boarding, you'll put on a life jacket and be given a traditional bamboo hat to protect you from the sun. Wearing the hat, it's easy to imagine yourself as a pilgrim from centuries ago, following the sacred route through Kumano.

As the weather had been sunny for several days, the river was amazingly clear. Although it was a hot midsummer day, the water felt refreshingly cool when I dipped my hand into it. The gentle breeze across the river and the occasional spray from the water made the journey incredibly comfortable.

From the boat, you can admire the majestic mountains of Kumano and the impressive giant rock formations that have been sculpted by nature over countless centuries.
I couldn't help but wonder if the people of the Heian period had once gazed upon the same breathtaking scenery.
As the boat gently drifted along the river, I felt as though I were traveling back in time to the age of the ancient pilgrims.

At one point, the engine is switched off, and the boat quietly drifts with the current. It's a peaceful moment when you can simply surrender yourself to the gentle flow of the river.
The only sounds were the breeze and the gentle flow of the river. In that peaceful silence, watching a heron suddenly take flight as our boat approached became one of the most memorable moments of the journey.

A Magical Moment with Hirushima and the Sound of the Shinobue

Along the route, you'll pass close to Hirushima, a legendary island. According to local legend, it was here that the Kumano deity stopped for lunch, or where Amaterasu Omikami and the Kumano deity once played a game of Go. Our guide also told us that birds are always seen resting on the island. It seems to be a peaceful haven not only for people, but for birds as well.

When we reached a peaceful stretch of the river, our storyteller quietly began to play the shinobue, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute.
The sound of the shinobue echoed softly across the quiet river, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and creating the mystical atmosphere for which Kumano is known.

This was one of the most memorable moments of the entire boat journey.

Arriving at Kumano Hayatama Taisha

As the boat continues downstream, you gradually begin to catch the scent of the sea. Before long, you'll find yourself thinking, "The ocean must be close." The Pacific Ocean is just around the corner. Before you know it, the 90-minute journey comes to an end. From the boat landing, it's only about a five-minute walk to Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
Following this sacred water pilgrimage route from the deep mountains to the sea was a truly unforgettable experience, allowing me to immerse myself in the magnificent nature and timeless history that are unique to Kumano.

This is an experience you simply can't enjoy by hiking the Kumano Kodo alone. If you want to gain a deeper appreciation of the Kumano pilgrimage, I highly recommend adding this boat journey to your itinerary.

After hiking the Kumano Kodo, be sure to experience the Kumano River Boat Tour as well.
Walk through the mountains, drift down the river, and arrive at the sea.
By following the same route as the ancient pilgrims, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the unique beauty and spirit of Kumano.

Things to Know Before Boarding

  • Advance reservations are required for the river boat tour.During the spring and autumn peak seasons, tours may be fully booked several months in advance.
  • Tours may be canceled due to weather conditions or river water levels.Tours may be canceled not only when heavy rain causes high water levels, but also when the water level becomes too low after an extended period of dry weather. It's a good idea to have an alternative plan just in case.
  • If you take the morning tour, you'll arrive at Kumano Hayatama Taisha at around 11:30 a.m., giving you plenty of time to explore both Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kamikura Shrine. In the afternoon, you can travel by train or bus to Nachi and visit Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-ji Temple, and Nachi Falls.
