Takijiri-oji to Kumano Nachi Taisha via Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kogumotori-goe & Ogumotori-goe | 4-Day Through Hike

4-Day Through Hike
A recommended through-hike for those who want to complete the full Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route to Kumano Nachi Taisha.

This is the classic 4-day through hike on the Nakahechi Route, covering approximately 68.3 km (42.4 miles) from Takijiri-oji to Kumano Nachi Taisha via Kumano Hongu Taisha. Beginning at the gateway to the sacred mountains, the trail leads you through deep forests and over remote mountain passes before finally reaching the Pacific coast. It is a truly unforgettable journey that showcases the unique beauty, history, and spirit of the Kumano Kodo.

On Day 3, the route takes you from Kumano Hongu Taisha over Kogumotori-goe Pass to Koguchi. Along the way, you'll reach Hyakken-gura, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Kumano Kodo, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the endless mountain ranges of Kumano.

The View from Hyakken-gura

On Day 4, you will hike from Koguchi over Ogumotori-goe Pass to Kumano Nachi Taisha. Ogumotori-goe is one of the most challenging sections of the Nakahechi Route, with long, steep climbs that test your endurance. After four days of walking, it can be a demanding final stage, but the sense of achievement when you reach the summit is truly unforgettable. Near the Funami Chaya Ruins and Nachi Kogen, you'll be rewarded with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean, a welcome sign that your destination is drawing near.

Arriving at Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seiganto-ji Temple, and Nachi Falls is the highlight of this route. The magnificent waterfall, its thunderous cascade, and the mist it creates form a truly sacred and awe-inspiring atmosphere. It is a fitting finale to your four-day pilgrimage, offering a memorable experience that beautifully concludes your journey along the Kumano Kodo.

The sense of accomplishment you feel after walking through Kumano's deep forests, following its historic pilgrimage trails, and finally reaching the sea is a truly unforgettable experience unique to this through hike.

Because this route covers a long distance and crosses both Kogumotori-goe and Ogumotori-goe passes, it is best suited for hikers who regularly enjoy long walks and have a good level of fitness. If needed, you can also shorten the walking distance by taking a local bus for part of the route, depending on your fitness level or the weather conditions.

Note: Koguchi, the overnight stop on Day 3, has only a limited number of accommodations. During the busy spring and autumn hiking seasons, rooms can be fully booked several months in advance. We recommend reserving your accommodation as early as possible.

Takijiri-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha via Akagigoe & Yunomine Onsen | 3-Day Akagigoe Route

A historic stone waymarker inscribed with "Yunomine This Way." Just as it did centuries ago, it continues to guide pilgrims toward Yunomine Onsen today.

Akagigoe Route
Ideal for hikers who want to enjoy a peaceful ridge walk and experience the historic hot spring village of Yunomine Onsen.

The Akagigoe Route branches off just before Hosshinmon-oji and leads to Yunomine Onsen. While the main Nakahechi Route continues through Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha, this route takes a different path, guiding you along peaceful forest trails and quiet ridge paths.

The junction for the Akagigoe Route. Cross the bridge, and your journey along the Akagigoe Route begins.

During the busy spring and autumn hiking seasons, the section from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha is often crowded with hikers and visitors. In contrast, the Akagigoe Route is much quieter, allowing you to enjoy Kumano's natural beauty in a peaceful setting. Although crossing the mountain pass requires a moderate level of fitness, you'll be rewarded with beautiful views of Kumano's mountain ranges from the ridge. The changing vegetation along the way also offers a different forest experience from the more popular route via Hosshinmon-oji.

The View from the Akagigoe Ridge

The greatest highlight of this route is that it finishes at Yunomine Onsen. After completing your hike, you can immediately relax in the hot springs and soothe your tired muscles—a perfect way to end your day on the Kumano Kodo.

Yunomine Onsen is a historic hot spring where pilgrims on the Kumano Pilgrimage traditionally performed Yugori, a ritual of purification, before visiting Kumano Hongu Taisha. Here, they cleansed both body and mind while recovering from the hardships of their journey. The famous Tsuboyu bath, designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned as the only UNESCO World Heritage hot spring bath in the world where visitors can still bathe today.

During the busy spring and autumn hiking seasons, it is not unusual to wait a long time to bathe in Tsuboyu. However, by following this route, you can reach Yunomine Onsen earlier than many visitors coming from Kumano Hongu Taisha, giving you a better chance of enjoying Tsuboyu with a shorter wait.

On the following day, you can follow in the footsteps of the ancient pilgrims by setting out for Hosshinmon-oji by bus after purifying yourself in the hot springs. From there, walk to Kumano Hongu Taisha to complete your pilgrimage. With plenty of time to spare, you can also explore Kumano Hongu Taisha and its traditional temple town at a leisurely pace, gaining a deeper appreciation of the history and culture of the Kumano Pilgrimage.

Takijiri-oji to Kumano Hayatama Taisha via Kumano Hongu Taisha & the Kumano River Boat Tour | 3-Day Kumano River Boat Tour Route

Kumano River Boat Tour Route
Ideal for those who want to experience two UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage routes—the Kumano Kodo and the traditional Kumano River Boat Tour.

After visiting Kumano Hongu Taisha, this route continues to Kumano Hayatama Taisha by way of a traditional boat trip down the Kumano River. In addition to walking the Kumano Kodo, you'll also experience the historic river pilgrimage route, making this an ideal itinerary for discovering the rich history and natural beauty of Kumano.

During the height of the Kumano Pilgrimage, many pilgrims visited Kumano Hongu Taisha before traveling down the Kumano River by boat to Kumano Hayatama Taisha. In those days, the Kumano River was an important pilgrimage route, just as significant as the Kumano Kodo itself.

Today, you can still follow this historic pilgrimage route by boat. From the river, you'll enjoy spectacular views of Kumano's mountains and beautiful gorges that cannot be experienced on foot. Drifting peacefully downstream while reflecting on the journeys of the ancient pilgrims is one of the unique highlights of this itinerary.

After the boat tour, visit Kumano Hayatama Taisha. If time permits, we also recommend exploring Kamikura-jinja Shrine and the historic castle town of Shingu. This itinerary offers a different side of Kumano, allowing you to experience its history and culture beyond the walking pilgrimage.

This itinerary is ideal for those who want to experience not only the Kumano Kodo, but also the pilgrimage tradition of the Kumano River. It is perfect for travelers who wish to explore Kumano's rich history, culture, and natural beauty in greater depth.

Note: The Kumano River Boat Tour requires advance reservations. During the busy spring and autumn hiking seasons, it is very popular and may be fully booked two to three months in advance. We recommend making your reservation as early as possible. Please also note that departures may be canceled due to weather conditions or river conditions.
